Renewing Our Sacred Vows VOW recently hosted a Black Marriage Day Conference on Saturday, March 29, 2008, themed ‘Renewing Our Sacred Vows.’ The Conference was held at First United Methodist Church in Longview, TX. Couples that attended the event listened to inspirational speakers on topics including; benefits of a healthy marriage, defying the odds, and commitment.
Lead speaker Reverend George E. Young, Sr. headlined the event by encouraging couples to strengthen their marriage. Reverend Young is currently the Senior Pastor at Holy Temple Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, and he is a Commissioner for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. He also speaks nationally on behalf of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) to promote healthy marriages in our communities.
Additional speakers included Billy and Virginia Taylor, Drs. Tracy and Tonya Andrus, William and Willie Mae Hughey, Michael and Sheila Johnson, and Homer and Jean Rockmore. Each of the couples that spoke demonstrated an incredible knowledge of marriage and what it takes to maintain a healthy relationship.
Approximately 40 couples renewed their vows during the Conference. The event proved to be an overwhelming success as many of the attendees expressed interest in joining the VOW Healthy Marriage Program. Many participants praised VOW for their efforts in the community to build better marriages. “It’s good to see strong African American marriages,” said one of the attendees. |
